Acerra – Romeo Spera, a 53-year-old construction worker employed by a company based in Acerra, died early yesterday afternoon after sixteen days of agony.
The man had been hospitalized in very serious conditions since December 18th, the day he was rescued at dawn in the Pozzillo district.
According to the reconstruction, Spera was found lying on the floor and near death inside a construction company warehouse. It was apparently a rescuer who raised the alarm and transported him to the emergency room at the Villa dei Fiori clinic, having found him already in the throes of death. In the initial medical intervention, the case was treated as a presumed work-related accident.
Subsequent medical tests revealed a severe cerebral hemorrhage and significant head trauma. To clarify the situation, medical staff ordered a CT scan (without contrast) and, having assessed the worker's critical condition, transferred him to the Ospedale del Mare in Naples, where the neurosurgery team performed a delicate operation in an attempt to limit the brain damage. Despite treatment, Spera never regained consciousness and died yesterday.
The Carabinieri of the Acerra station worked on the incident and were able to locate the man who had provided first aid. His statements, gathered through summary information, allowed them to pinpoint the exact location of the discovery and reconstruct the events leading up to his transport to the hospital.
According to the reconstruction, on the morning of December 18, Spera had gone shortly after 6:00 to the warehouse in Pozzillo, where he waited alone for the arrival of his colleagues with whom he was supposed to reach a construction site.
Attention now shifts to the legal front. The Nola Public Prosecutor's Office, which has jurisdiction over the area, may order the seizure of the body for an autopsy, which is considered crucial to clarifying the cause of death and determining any liability, including in relation to the initial medical management and the differential diagnosis between trauma from a fall and a possible ischemic event.
