Monsignor Raffaele Nogaro, Bishop Emeritus of Caserta since 2009, passed away at the age of 92. The news of his death, which occurred late this evening, was announced by the current Bishop of Caserta and Capua, Pietro Lagnese, in a heartfelt message to the diocese.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce that a few moments ago Monsignor Raffaele Nogaro ended his earthly life,” wrote Lagnese, inviting the community to entrust “Father Nogaro to the mercy of God.”
Born in the province of Udine, Nogaro's name is inextricably linked to Campania, where he served as a pastoral minister for over twenty years, first leading the diocese of Sessa Aurunca and then, from 1990 to 2009, that of Caserta. His episcopate was characterized by a courageous and tenacious fight against organized crime and a constant commitment to the most vulnerable.
A commitment that left a profound mark, as the institutions recall. The president of the Province of Caserta, Anacleto Colombiano, called his passing "a profound loss for the Caserta community, for Campania, and for the entire Southern Italy." "He was a courageous pastor," he added, "capable of combining spiritual leadership with a strong civic commitment, always on the side of the poor, of justice, and of legality."
Former Campania Regional President Antonio Bassolino shared his thoughts on social media, writing: "The sorrow and sadness are truly profound. Nogaro was a fundamental figurehead in solidarity with the most vulnerable and in the fight against the Camorra."
A man who, as Colombiano emphasized, "gave voice to an often wounded but never resigned territory," becoming an example of "public commitment grounded in the values of dignity, solidarity, and responsibility." His legacy of faith and civic courage remains a point of reference for the entire community today.
