The season at the Teatro Totò – Teatro della Tradizione Partenopea continues with a bang, hosting the new production by the Compagnia Stabile del Totò, “Hai un amico all'INPS?”, a contemporary comedy written by Gaetano Liguori and Rosario Verde, directed by Liguori himself, from January 9th to 18th (with a double performance on Saturday).

A show that chooses the path of laughter to sink a scalpel into one of the most sensitive wounds of our time: job loss, existential precariousness, and the ambiguous gray area of social security mechanisms, between welfare, scams, and false invalids.

At the center of the story is a brilliant young software engineer, suddenly plunged into the abyss of unemployment. Just when all seems lost, an absurd reversal occurs: money unexpectedly arrives from social security institutions, first by mistake, then through an increasingly opaque and fraudulent system.

The wheels turn, the protagonist is seduced by the easy money, until the comedy reveals the price to be paid. Directed by Gaetano Liguori, the production strikes a compelling balance between popular comedy and social satire. On stage, alongside Davide Ferri, a true favorite of Neapolitan audiences, are Peppe Laurato and Edoardo Guadagno, with the participation of Raffaele Esposito, supported by Natalia Cretella, Giancarlo De Simone, Giovanna Pignieri, Paola Bocchetti, and Marco Palmieri.

The production features sets by Massimo Malavolta, costumes by Cira Izzo, and assistant director Maria Autiero. "Do You Have a Friend at INPS?" thus follows in the tradition of Neapolitan theater, capable of making people laugh and think, holding up a distorting yet recognizable mirror to the audience, where irony becomes a tool for truth. A show that entertains, unsettles, and questions, reminding us that, in Italy, comedy is often nothing more than news disguised as laughter.

I read the article about Teato Totò and it seemed interesting. The topic of work is very timely, and the comedy could help us reflect on these issues, but I hope it's more than just a laugh for its own sake.
