Naples will host the first regatta of the 38th edition of the America's Cup on July 10, 2027. The announcement came from Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand and America's Cup Events, during the official presentation of the America's Cup Partnership and the teams competing for the Louis Vuitton America's Cup 2027, held at Palazzo Reale.
The inaugural race will open the final match that will award the trophy: in the water will be the reigning champions, Team New Zealand, and the crew that emerges victorious from the qualifying races.
Luna Rossa is also banking heavily on the Naples event. "I think the America's Cup in Naples will be unique, just as the city of Naples is unique in the world," said Max Sirena, CEO of the Italian team. Sirena recalled the regattas held in the city between 2012 and 2013 and emphasized the expected impact on spectators: "It will be unique in terms of attendance, because Neapolitans are unique." He then made a plea: "We'll be under a lot of pressure, and it's crucial that all of Naples cheers for Luna Rossa and not New Zealand." The team, he added, is considering a return in the spring "to gain confidence" before finally approaching the races.
On the sidelines of the event, Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi explained the reasons for choosing the Gulf of Naples: "It stems from everything that nature offers here, but also from what the humanity of Naples offers." For Abodi, the America's Cup represents "the love that this city and Italy have for the sea" and is also a symbol of the relationship between human expertise and innovation: "It is the emblem of the relationship between humanity and technology."
The minister also included the America's Cup in a broader program of major sporting events in Italy in the coming years, calling them a promotional tool and "highly profitable investments" in terms of the quality of the events and their organization.
"Today marks the beginning of a great international adventure with our city at its heart," said Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. "It's a unique opportunity for growth and job creation, and therefore a major challenge." On the organizational front, Manfredi assured that the work "is proceeding very smoothly" and that the deadlines will be met: "A grade? We're above passing."
