The news arrived yesterday morning within the walls of Civitavecchia prison like a final blow. Claudio Carlomagno, 44, detained for eight days on charges of murdering and concealing the body of his wife, Federica Torzullo, learned that his parents had taken their own lives. He was informed of the news by a psychologist and a psychiatrist from the prison administration, called upon to manage a situation of extreme emotional fragility.
Pasquale Carlomagno and Maria Messenio committed suicide on Saturday afternoon in their villa in Anguillara Sabazia, hanging themselves from the same porch beam. The house, now under seizure, is the same one where their son had taken refuge on January 10th, after being placed under investigation by the Civitavecchia Prosecutor's Office.
In those days, the Carabinieri had already seized the other family home, at Via Costantino 9, also in Anguillara, the scene of the murder of Federica Torzullo, a crime to which Carlomagno admitted during the preliminary hearing.
After receiving the news, the 44-year-old was placed in solitary confinement in a single cell and is now under constant surveillance by prison officers. Prison officials ordered this measure because they deemed him a "high suicide risk."
According to leaks, the man allegedly repeatedly shouted that he wanted to end it all, displaying severe dejection. The knowledge that his parents' actions were directly linked to his wife's murder further aggravated his psychological condition.
The words of the lawyer
"This case demonstrates, more than ever, that even the families of those who commit such a serious crime are victims," commented defense attorney Andrea Miroli. "Victims of a crime whose painful consequences extend even to those who bear no responsibility. It was a true catabasis, a descent into hell, that Mr. and Mrs. Carlomagno were unable to bear."
The criminal lawyer confirmed that the reasons for the act were contained in a letter left for his second son, Davide. "It is our duty to maintain respect and privacy regarding that content," he clarified, while also denouncing the climate of verbal violence that has developed around the incident.
Even yesterday, social media was still posting messages like, "That woman was right to kill herself, having given birth to a monster." Faced with this, and knowing how media pressure can devastate consciences, we should all practice collective pedagogy to ensure that similar tragedies don't spill over the legal barriers.
According to Claudio's brother, the parents felt hemmed in by the media's ridicule and the hostility of the town that had welcomed them: "They wanted to leave Anguillara," he confided. This social isolation, combined with the unbearable burden of the legal case, contributed to their extreme decision.
"My thoughts now go not only to my client, who is under constant surveillance, but also to his son," Miroli concluded. "In just a few days, he lost his mother, his grandparents, and, essentially, his father. It's a tragedy within a tragedy." The lawyer will visit Carlomagno in prison today to assess his psychological well-being.

It's a very complicated and sad situation, not only for Claudio but also for his son. The loss of his parents and his mother is a terrible blow. More psychological support is needed for those in these situations.
