Avellino – Concrete (or in this case, earth) stands still before history. This morning, January 30, 2026, soldiers from the Naples Cultural Heritage Protection Unit executed a precautionary seizure order in the Passo di Mirabella Eclano district, targeting an area located near the prestigious archaeological site of Aeclanum.

The order, issued by the preliminary investigations judge of the Benevento Court at the request of the Sannio Prosecutor's Office, is the result of a thorough investigation that revealed a complete lack of permits for building work in an area subject to strict conservation restrictions.

The damage avoided

According to the Carabinieri, a surface area of approximately 380 square meters had been filled with earth. This seemingly trivial operation actually posed a direct threat to the integrity of the archaeological subsoil: the earthworks occurred just a short distance from the remains of an ancient kiln and several Roman-era tombs.

Protection of the territory

The project is part of a broader monitoring effort at sensitive sites in Irpinia, aimed at preventing illegal construction from erasing traces of the region's Roman past. Investigations will now continue to determine the responsibilities of the clients and contractors.

The article discusses a serious situation regarding cultural heritage, but it's unclear why these permit denials occurred. Furthermore, I wonder if there are plans to prevent similar problems in the future.
