It was around 19 pm when the Carabinieri from the Torre del Greco station, together with the military from the mobile radio section, intervened at the Maresca hospital.
A 40-year-old woman has just arrived at the emergency room after being violently attacked by her partner. He's also waiting in the waiting room: a 38-year-old local man.
The woman is confused, her right eye is swollen and bruised, and she has a lacerated wound near her ear. These are signs of violence that, as will soon emerge, is not an isolated incident.
The Carabinieri's reconstruction reveals a twenty-year cohabitation, two children aged 9 and 7, and a relationship marked by constant arguments and aggression. At its core was the man's obsessive jealousy, convinced—without any basis—of alleged infidelity.
A few weeks ago he broke her finger
The last incident before the breakup occurred on January 3rd: the woman was attacked and suffered a broken finger. Again, no charges were filed. At the hospital, she reported a domestic incident. "I didn't want to ruin the father of my children," she later told the police.
But the end of the relationship isn't accepted by the man, who continues to contact her insistently. Until yesterday, when the proposal for a "final meeting to clarify matters" arrives. The woman initially refuses, then gives in. The meeting is scheduled at his parents' house.
The 38-year-old is the only one in the apartment. The woman enters, intending, once again, to try to start over "for the sake of her children." A hug, then another escalation: accusations, demands for confessions about infidelities that never happened. She firmly denies them. From words, they turn to physical violence.
The woman buys makeup to cover her bruises.
Slaps, punches to the face. The woman tries to run away while the man steals her purse and empties it. She manages to escape but remains in the building's entrance hall, dazed, in pain, with only one thought: to cover the bruises, to keep everyone from knowing. She goes to buy some makeup.
Shortly afterward, the man calls her back. He apologizes and invites her to come back. She accepts, again. But there are no excuses: there are more blows, kicks, and punches. Yet another attack occurs in the street. A slap knocks her to the ground, her head hitting the asphalt. She manages to get up and take refuge at a friend's house, who takes her to the hospital. He continues to call her repeatedly.
At that point, the Carabinieri intervened. The incident was reconstructed, also in light of the unreported precedent. The man was arrested on charges of domestic abuse and transferred to prison.
This story isn't just a court report. It's a warning. The "final meeting to clarify" is often a dangerous illusion, an emotional trap that exposes women to enormous risks. The data and facts prove it: in the vast majority of cases, violence erupts precisely when a woman tries to break up.
Protecting your children doesn't mean staying, nor going back. Reporting isn't destroying a family: it's saving it, starting with yourself. Talking, asking for help, and relying on institutions can make the difference between a way out and a tragedy waiting to happen.

This woman's story is very sad and sobering. It's incredible how people can tolerate such serious violence for so long. More must be done to protect women in these difficult situations.
