ATM attacks are a cause for concern and have come under the scrutiny of the Naples Prefecture. Following the latest incidents reported between Giugliano and Nola, where several ATMs were bombed by specialized gangs, the issue was addressed during the Committee for Public Order and Security.
Prefect Michele di Bari provided the update, describing the phenomenon as now of national concern and calling for increased surveillance in the areas considered most vulnerable. In recent days, extraordinary and targeted checks have been implemented to counter the actions of criminal groups using explosives to empty credit institution ATMs.
The prefect explained that he had asked the mayors of Giugliano and Nola to further strengthen the video surveillance systems, which are considered a crucial tool for both prevention and post-burglary investigations. The issue had already been addressed at a previous Committee meeting held in Giugliano, confirming the focus on the northern part of the province.
Alongside the alarm over bank robberies, the Prefecture also released encouraging data: overall, the Giugliano and Nola areas have seen a 14 percent decrease in crime. This positive sign, according to the prefect, should not, however, lead to lowered vigilance regarding high-impact crimes such as those against credit institutions, which can generate significant social alarm.
