Road Victim Associations: A technical panel is urgently needed to address the Campania carnage.

With 261 deaths in 2024, an 18,6% increase over the previous year, the region confirms its dismal national record. Associations are calling on President Fico, prefects, and police chiefs to intervene in a strategy based on ISTAT data and EU targets.

Naples – Road accident victims' associations have launched an impassioned appeal to the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Roberto Fico, the prefects of Campania, and the regional police commissioners, requesting an immediate meeting to address the road death emergency.

Based on recent ISTAT data released on December 16, 2025, during a conference on regional road accidents, association representatives—led by spokesperson Biagio Ciaramella—propose the establishment of a permanent technical committee. The goal: to develop a concrete strategy to reduce road fatalities in Campania, starting with an analysis of the numbers, which paint an alarming picture.

In 2024, 261 people died in Campania, with over 15 injured.

In 2024, Campania recorded 10.874 road accidents, with 261 deaths and 15.386 injuries, marking a 6,2% increase in accidents, a 4,8% increase in injuries, and an 18,6% increase in fatalities compared to 2023.

Nationally, while deaths decreased by 0,3% (reaching 3.030 in total), the region remains at the top of the negative rankings, with a mortality rate of 2,4 deaths per 100 accidents, higher than the Italian average of 1,7.

Since 2010, road deaths in Campania have increased by 2,8%, bucking the national trend of 26,3%. The main factors include distracted driving, irregular maneuvers, and speeding, which account for 35,4% of cases, with a higher incidence on extra-urban roads.

75,1% of accidents occur in urban areas, concentrated in metropolitan centers such as Naples, Caserta, and Salerno, while the summer months (May-September) and nighttime hours amplify the risks, with peaks in mortality between 3 and 5 in the morning.

The social cost of this "hidden war," as associations call it, amounts to 1,3 billion euros for Campania alone.

At the center of the associations' criticism is a regional "ideas competition" project on road safety in Campania's schools, which has been active for over ten years and is funded with more than €100 annually by the Region.

Despite the investment, ISTAT data shows no significant reduction in fatalities, prompting associations to call for an urgent review. "An initiative like this should generate tangible results, fostering a true culture of safety among young people," said Ciaramella, who attended the ISTAT conference on December 16, 2025, where the 2024 regional data was presented.

The associations emphasize that the project has not raised sufficient awareness, leaving the rising trend in casualties unchanged. The appeal falls within the context of European and national obligations. The European Union requires Italy to halve deaths and serious injuries by 2030 compared to pre-pandemic levels (2019), aiming for "Vision Zero" with zero fatalities by 2050.

This translates into the National Road Safety Plan 2030 (PNSS), which includes measures such as mandatory vehicle technologies (emergency braking, lane keeping), stricter rules on alcohol, drugs, and cell phone use, and awareness campaigns to reduce the 95% of accidents caused by human error.

Among the new EU measures, intelligent speed assistance, anti-distraction systems, and cross-border driving license suspension for serious violations, approved in 2025.

Ciaramella and the associations don't intend to limit themselves to Campania: "We will analyze data from all Italian regions, because road carnage is a collective problem." They are calling for the involvement of institutions, other associations, and citizens in a coordinated action, transforming the appeal into a national movement against a "war" that, according to the data, continues to relentlessly claim victims.
