Avellino – A new year brings unresolved issues at the Avellino Bellizzi prison. This morning, yet another attack against the Penitentiary Police occurred: a female inspector was punched in the back by an inmate from the general prison section.

According to Raffaele Troise, head of the GAU Secretariat of the UILPA Penitentiary Police of Avellino Bellizzi, the perpetrator of the attack is an inmate transferred to the Irpinia institution a few days ago for reasons of order and security, already known for violent behavior.

Following the attack, the Inspector required emergency care: the diagnosis speaks of a 20-day prognosis.

The UILPA Penitentiary Police Union (UILPA Polizia Penitenziaria) has expressed its firm and resolute condemnation, stressing the particularly serious nature of the violence perpetrated against a female unit. The union denounces a situation now spiraling out of control, with an increasingly aggressive inmate population lacking any code of conduct, while staff are forced to work in conditions of constant risk.

"We continue to witness," UILPA states, "a deafening silence from an Administration perceived as inactive and distant from the real problems facing prisons, while staff await concrete interventions that restore dignity and safety to their work."

The UILPA Penitentiary Police expressed its full solidarity and best wishes for a speedy recovery to the colleague who was attacked.

It's sad to see the problems in Avellino prison continue unanswered. Violence against officers is unacceptable, and it seems no one is taking the situation seriously. More measures are needed to ensure safety.
