Naples – He is believed to have pulled the trigger during the punitive ambush that took place on August 5th in the Barra neighborhood. The Naples Police Headquarters' Flying Squad arrested Raffaele Giordano, 32, known as "'o luongo," believed to be close to the Aprea clan and identified by investigators as the organization's gunman.
The man is charged with assault and unlawful possession of a firearm, crimes aggravated by mafia methods.
The punishment for “unauthorized” thefts
According to the reconstruction by investigators from the Organized Crime section of the Flying Squad, led by Giovanni Leuci and Deputy Police Commissioner Giuseppe Sasso, the victim of the ambush was Ettore Velotti, 44, known to law enforcement but with no specific criminal record for Camorra involvement.
The man was allegedly summoned to a building in the neighborhood by members of the Aprea clan and reprimanded for committing numerous car thefts without the gang's consent. At the end of the "conversation," the punishment was imposed: Velotti was shot.
The role of the gunman and the arrest
According to the prosecution, the shooter was Giordano himself, believed to be one of the group's gunmen. The arrest was made pursuant to a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the Naples court at the request of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate. Investigators consider this an initial investigative finding, but the investigation remains open.
The escape, the chase and the shots fired
After being injured, Giordano allegedly fled in a car with three other associates. Shortly thereafter, the group was pursued by the victim's brother, driving another car. The chase ended when the four men's car crashed into the wall of a house.
In the immediate aftermath of the accident, before fleeing, one of the fugitives fired several shots at the pursuing car, damaging it in several places. The shooter's identity is still under investigation.
The injury and the victim's previous convictions
Velotti suffered injuries to a leg and foot. Transported to the emergency room of Villa Betania Hospital, he was discharged that evening without serious injuries. The nature of the attack immediately left little doubt about its Camorra origin.
The 44-year-old, a resident of Corso Sirena, although not affiliated with any criminal gang, frequents criminal circles in the neighborhood and has several previous convictions, including property crimes and resisting a public officer.
Investigations continue: hunt for accomplices
Investigators are now focusing on identifying the other members of the armed commando who participated in the punitive expedition, considered a clear sign of the Aprea clan's control of the territory in the Barra neighborhood.
