An argument quickly escalated into a brutal attack, culminating in a delicate surgical procedure and an arrest. This is what happened late Saturday evening in the Libertà district of Benevento, where Armando Mercurio, a 37-year-old from Benevento with a criminal record, allegedly seriously injured MC, 68, the father of his ex-girlfriend's current partner.
Mercurio was placed under house arrest on charges of grievous bodily harm. The order was carried out by Carabinieri officers from the Operations and Mobile Unit of the Benevento Company, coordinated by Captain Giuseppe Friscuolo, after briefing the magistrate on duty, Deputy Prosecutor Giulio Barbato.
The suspect has appointed Vincenzo Sguera as his defense attorney. The injured man and his wife, who also sought medical attention, are being represented by Vittorio Fucci.
The alarm was raised with a call to 112 reporting an ongoing argument on Via Silvio Pellico. Upon arriving on the scene, officers found that the 68-year-old had already been treated and transported to the emergency room of the San Pio Hospital. There, paramedics diagnosed him with serious head injuries; during the night, the man underwent complex neurosurgery to mitigate the effects of the blows he had sustained.
The investigation quickly identified the alleged perpetrator of the attack. According to the reconstruction, Mercurio punched and kicked the victim in the face and head, continuing to attack even after the elderly man was down. When identified, the 37-year-old was still wearing clothing with obvious traces of blood, which were subsequently seized.
The motive: complex family relationships
At the heart of the case are complex family relationships and conflicts that had developed over time. Mercurio allegedly had a past relationship with a woman, which ended with a restraining order and the application of an electronic bracelet.
Recently, the woman reportedly began a new relationship with the son of the man who was subsequently attacked. This situation has rekindled tensions that had never subsided, so much so that the suspect, according to reports, had repeatedly wandered around the 68-year-old's home.
Investigators are now investigating a crucial point: whether the meeting between the two was entirely coincidental or the result of premeditation, perhaps for a degenerate clarification. That very evening, in fact, a birthday party was planned, which was supposed to be attended by some members of the families involved in the disputes.
Following the completion of the formal procedures, Mercurio was taken to his home under house arrest. In the coming hours, the preliminary investigations judge will be called to validate the order, in the presence of the parties' lawyers. Meanwhile, the injured man's condition remains the focus of attention, while the Libertà neighborhood community is shaken by yet another episode of domestic violence.
