Naples – Severe weather returns to Campania, prompting a new alert from the regional Civil Protection Department.
Starting at 15:00 PM today, Sunday, January 4, and for the next 24 hours, several areas of the region will be affected by worsening weather conditions, requiring the issuing of a Yellow alert.
Forecasts and affected areas
The forecast calls for scattered rainfall, mostly in the form of showers or thunderstorms. These events could prove intense, affecting the region in scattered fashion.
The criticality warning specifically concerns three macro-areas of the region:
Zone 1: Campanian plain, Naples, Gulf Islands and Vesuvian area;
Zone 2: Upper Volturno and Matese;
Zone 3: Sorrento-Amalfi Peninsula, Sarno Mountains and Picentini Mountains.
It's not just the rain that's causing concern. The yellow alert is closely linked to localized hydrogeological risk. The fragile nature of the land, severely tested by rainfall, could trigger significant land-impact phenomena. The Civil Protection Department warns of the risk of flooding in urban centers, rising water levels in rivers with possible inundation in surrounding areas, as well as the risk of rockfall and landslides, especially in mountainous or hilly areas where the ground is more unstable.
As is standard practice in these scenarios, the Regional Operations Room has called on the competent authorities to activate the Municipal Operations Centers (COC). Mayors and local administrators are responsible for implementing all necessary measures to prevent and combat hydrogeological instability, ensuring the safety of citizens and monitoring the most vulnerable areas until the end of the emergency, scheduled for 15:00 PM tomorrow, Monday, January 5th.
