A mixed picture emerges from the Fire Department's data at dawn on January 1, 2026. Despite the usual overtime work by rescue teams, the numbers suggest a decidedly less "fiery" New Year's Eve than in the past: 770 interventions were carried out overnight for fires related to the celebrations, a significant decrease from the 882 recorded twelve months ago.
In Naples, a ground-floor apartment in a building on Via Francesco Blundo went up in flames while the owners were away. Neighbors shared images online while they awaited the arrival of firefighters. It remains to be determined whether it was a short circuit or a fire started by fireworks launched from the terrace.
The fireworks also caused the destruction of a pizzeria in Vomero, while several cars were destroyed in Casoria.
The geography of the emergency throughout Italy
Northern Italy experienced the greatest pressure on rescue teams.
The lowest number of calls goes to Emilia-Romagna with 114, closely followed by Lombardy (113). The numbers are also high in the North-East (Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige with 77 interventions in total) and along the Tyrrhenian coast and in the South, with Campania and Tuscany tied at 69.
Below is a breakdown of the interventions by region:
Emilia-Romagna 114
Lombardy 113
Veneto and Trentino AA 77
Campania / Tuscany 69
Apulia 68
Piedmont 63
Lazio 61

The data analysis is interesting, but many things don't add up. There's a decrease in fires, but the damage in Naples and other areas is significant. I don't understand why there are such conflicting numbers.
