Castellammare, Tsunami trial: D'Alessandro family acquitted, Bellarosa and Lucchese convicted

The Naples Court of Appeals has closed a portion of the DDA investigation involving 22 leaders and affiliates of the Scanzano clan: Nunzio Bellarosa received seven years and Antonio Lucchese five years and 10 months. Pasquale and Michele D'Alessandro and Teresa Martone were cleared: the charge regarding the alleged 5% extortion on contracts and construction sites does not hold up.

The Naples Court of Appeal has ruled to dismiss the "Tsunami" trial, which arose from the District Anti-Mafia Directorate's investigation into the dealings of the Scanzano clan between 2005 and 2010.

For this segment of the proceedings, the judges largely confirmed the first-instance ruling (2020 ruling): Nunzio Bellarosa was sentenced to 7 years in prison and Antonio Lucchese to 5 years and 10 months.

On the clan front, however, the acquittal verdicts have arrived: Teresa Martone (defended by the lawyers Gennaro Somma and Renato D'Antuono), widow of the godfather Michele D'Alessandro, her son Pasquale D'Alessandro and her cousin Michele D'Alessandro, son of Luigi D'Alessandro known as Gigginiello, have been exonerated.

The prosecution's requests and the outcome of the trial

In its closing argument, the Attorney General's Office had requested heavy sentences: 12 years for Michele D'Alessandro (son of Luigi, known as "Gigginiello"), 6 years for Pasquale D'Alessandro, and 3 years for Teresa Martone; 10 years for Bellarosa, and 12 years for Lucchese.

The prosecution's case, however, failed to pass muster with the judges regarding the D'Alessandros and Martones' positions: acquittals had already been pronounced in the first instance, and those arguments did not hold up on appeal either.

The alleged "protection money" on contracts and construction sites

The investigation uncovered an alleged extortion scheme that impacted both public works and private businesses and construction sites. According to the investigation, business owners were forced to pay a fee equal to 5% of the value of the contracts, as a price to pay the gang for "safe working conditions."

To support their case, investigators relied on wiretaps and wiretaps, which they believed could help them determine the roles and relationships between the entrepreneurs and the group's alleged contacts.

The article is well-structured, but there are some points that are unclear. I don't understand why some were acquitted while others were not; it seems like the various defendants are being treated differently. More explanation would be helpful.
