It's going to be a night of heavy European football at the Maradona. On Wednesday at 9:00 PM, Napoli faces Chelsea in the final round of the Champions League League Phase, and UEFA has entrusted the match to the experience of Frenchman Clement Turpin, one of the most experienced referees in the international arena. This decision speaks to the importance of the match and the tension that will accompany a crucial ninety minutes for the Azzurri's European campaign.

Turpin's previous encounters with Napoli reveal a mixed record. The Azzurri have enjoyed success in victories against Aik and away to Salzburg, but they've also suffered heavy defeats, such as the home defeat against Real Madrid and the defeat in Moscow against Spartak. A relationship marked by ups and downs, which adds a further layer of curiosity to a match already fraught with technical and environmental significance.

More generally, Turpin's history with Italian teams is long and varied, with memorable nights and bittersweet evenings. The French referee has often faced Serie A clubs, even in high-profile matches, including European semifinals and quarterfinals, proving himself adept at managing pressure, pace, and heated stages.

Napoli-Chelsea, however, will be a story unto itself. In a Maradona side that promises to be full and charged, every incident could weigh like a millstone. And Turpin's referee will be called upon to keep a tightrope in a match that promises intensity, quality, and nerves of steel until the very last ball.

Conte applauds Napoli: "A Champions League performance, a deceptive result."

by Vincenzo Scarpa January 28, 2026 - 23:31 am 23:31

Antonio Conte is bitter but undaunted. After the defeat against Chelsea and the team's exit from the Champions League, the Napoli coach praises his team's performance and clearly identifies the outcome of the match. "The finishing made the difference. They were more clinical and more precise, and João Pedro made the difference. He's a truly important player for Chelsea."

Despite the elimination, the judgment on the race remains positive. "We're still proud and satisfied, despite half the team being out, we played, if not on par, better than them in my opinion, we deserved much better." Regret, however, also looks back at the European path. "It's a shame because the regret is for Copenhagen, we were winning and that's the game that condemned us."

After the 3-2 defeat against Chelsea that cost Napoli elimination from the Champions League, Giovanni Di Lorenzo is not looking for excuses and points the finger at the Azzurri's European campaign. «Maradona's applause at the end of the match? They are always with us regardless of the result, but we knew that. We wanted to win tonight and play a great match. It's a shame, but we certainly didn't lose tonight.»

The Italian defender acknowledges the value of the performance against the English, but broadens his gaze to previous matches. «We made too many mistakes along the way, we dropped too many points, it's a shame because tonight despite the result we played an excellent match, we tried to keep the pace high and put pressure on them, it's a shame about the result».

Referee Clement Turpin is one of the most experienced, but Napoli has also suffered defeats against him. We hope he can officiate well tonight, but the record isn't exactly favorable to the Azzurri.
