Abbinante clan sentenced to nearly 280 years in prison on appeal; 20-year sentence upheld for boss Arcangelo

The Naples Court of Appeals has ruled on the Monterosa neighborhood gang: the most severe sentences have been upheld and some have been reduced. One defendant has been acquitted "for not having committed the crime." The investigation began with surveillance cameras on Via Monte Rosa and was supported by wiretaps and statements from two collaborators of justice.

Nearly 280 years of total prison time: this is the total number of sentences handed down by the Naples Court of Appeal in the trial of the alleged leaders and underlings of the Abbinante clan, active in the Monterosa district.

The judges confirmed the 20-year sentence for mafia boss Arcangelo Abbinante and, with the same sentence, for Alessio Cuomo and Patrizio Sergio.

Confirmations and discounts

The appeal verdict fully confirms and reduces the sentences of some defendants compared to the first degree. Specifically, Domenico Martello's sentences were reduced from 11 years to 8 years and 10 months, while Salvatore Volpicelli and Salvatore Morriale's sentences were reduced from 8 to 6 years.
Vincenzo Frattini was acquitted "for not having committed the crime."

The investigation: cameras, wiretaps, and informants

The investigation that led to the trial began with footage from two security cameras installed on Via Monte Rosa. Investigators then reconstructed the group's operations through wiretaps, surveillance, and statements from collaborators of justice, including Luigi Rignante and Giuseppe Ambra.

According to the prosecution's argument, the clan operated with a stable, top-down structure, with clearly defined roles and tasks, to ensure continuity of drug dealing in both static and dynamic "squares," with deliveries ordered by telephone.

Extortion and territorial control: "our home"

The file describes extortionate pressure on local entrepreneurs and businesses, with widespread control of the neighborhood, referred to as "our home." A system of forced supply was also alleged: shopkeepers and businesses in the neighborhood were allegedly forced to purchase bread, dairy products, bags, and other goods only from "select" suppliers, who in turn were required to pay for exclusivity.

During the investigation, garages used as storage facilities were also identified, where weapons and drugs were seized. In an incident dating back to March 2018, a €50 monthly extortion charge was reported, even from those with minimal income from street vending.

The arithmetic sum of the sentences reported for the convicts listed in the article (excluding the acquitted one) brings to a total of approximately 280 years of prison.

The article gives pause for thought about the situation of organized crime in Italy. The sentences are serious, but I don't know if they're enough to stop such an entrenched system. It's important that institutions continue to work for justice.
