Santa Maria Capua Vetere – The judicial chapter in the armed robbery committed last September 1st against a betting shop in Castel Volturno has ended with decidedly lenient sentences.

The trial, held with an alternative rite, led to moderate sentences and a full acquittal for the five young defendants involved in the raid.

The convictions and the acquittal

The defense strategy played a crucial role in the outcome of the trial. Roberto Junior Ewusajoe, represented by attorney Giuseppe Gallo, chose the fast-track trial. Having confessed, the young man received a sentence of 3 years and 10 months in prison: a sentence that allowed him to leave the Ariano Irpino prison, where he was being held, and be placed under house arrest with an electronic tag.

Luca Iannilli, however, emerged completely clear of the matter. Defended by lawyer Antonio Veltre, Iannilli was fully acquitted on the grounds of non-compliance, thus dismantling the charges against him.

The other three defendants opted for plea bargains. Among them is the inside man, the unfaithful employee of the company who had cooperated with the investigation. Having paid compensation for damages, the three agreed to sentences of 2 years and 6 months each.

The 14 euro heist and the employee's betrayal

The incident dates back to early September, when the commando raided the betting shop armed with a pistol. The robbers made a clean sweep, heading straight for a haul of fourteen thousand euros: a significant sum, unusual considering the daily cash flow.

This very detail was the first alarm bell for the investigators, immediately directing suspicions towards someone who knew the business's cash flows.

The hunch proved correct: the insider was an agency employee. The investigation, coordinated by prosecutor Annalisa Imparato of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Public Prosecutor's Office, relied on video surveillance footage and extensive local operations.

The operation, explained at the time to the police headquarters by Deputy Commissioner Pasquale Lamitella (head of the Castel Volturno police station) and Gianluca Tuccillo of the Flying Squad, led to the arrest of the five young men from Castel Volturno and the seizure of a pistol with its serial number removed, found in the possession of one of the accomplices.

This article is very interesting, but in my opinion, it doesn't explain very well how they discovered the insider. Furthermore, the penalties seem too lenient for such a serious crime as armed robbery. More clarity is needed.
