Naples – Appointments as a court-appointed technical consultant in exchange for illicit assistance in passing a public competition.
This is one of the chapters that emerged from the investigation into the rigged sentences at the Justices of the Peace office of the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, which led to the suspension of three magistrates by decision of the Court of Rome, granting the requests of the Rome Prosecutor's Office following investigations conducted by the State Police and the Guardia di Finanza of Caserta.
Questions before the exam
According to what was documented by the wiretaps, one of the judges under investigation is said to have promised assignments as technical consultants to a doctor from an outpatient clinic in Caserta and to a university professor.
In exchange, the magistrate's partner was supposed to receive, before the exam, the list of questions for the competition on hospital pharmacy management, scheduled for December 16, 2024.
An attempt at facilitation that, however, was ineffective: on the day of the test, the woman handed over a blank sheet of paper, even though – according to investigators – she had objectively been provided with assistance anyway.
The investigating judge rejects this charge
Precisely due to the lack of concrete results, the Rome preliminary investigations judge has decided to reject the prosecutor's requests limited to this specific charge, which however remains part of the broader investigative framework.
The system of fake road accidents
The heart of the investigation remains the fake traffic accident business, which allegedly implicated suspended magistrates and four lawyers as bribers. One of the lawyers was placed under house arrest, while the other three were temporarily banned from practicing law for one year.
According to an investigative estimate, the four professionals paid approximately €38 in bribes to the judges under investigation, obtaining favorable rulings in exchange for profits exceeding €300.
Money, luxury and valuable gifts
The illicit payments weren't just in cash. Investigators also allege €4 worth of Gucci bags, bottles of Dom Pérignon champagne, Cartier vouchers, and gift baskets, evidence of a well-established corruption network.
Insurance scams
The gang operated primarily in the Casal di Principe area, staging fake road accidents to the detriment of insurance companies. Further investigations revealed a recurring pattern: cyclists and pedestrians were hit in single file, often at crosswalks, with victims chosen from among the unemployed and those with criminal records, used as extras to obtain millions in compensation.
A system that, according to investigators, would not have been possible without the complicity of those who, in the courts, should have guaranteed legality and impartiality.
