Ischia – The fight against environmental crimes marks a new step forward in the fight against legality on the island of Ischia. Officers from the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza in Naples have identified and seized a 300-square-meter area, transformed into a veritable open-air landfill in the municipality of Forio.

The blitz during the unloading

The operation, conducted by the Ischia Finance Police as part of their routine checks on the area, was triggered when the Guardia di Finanza (Fiamme Gialle) noticed two heavy vehicles, belonging to a local construction company, dumping debris in an unauthorized area.

Immediate intervention helped crystallize the situation: a constant flow of waste materials that was suffocating a valuable green area.

A rubble deposit on topsoil

Approximately 860 cubic meters of demolition materials were found on the site. This non-hazardous waste was dumped directly onto the topsoil, posing a very high risk of soil contamination.

In addition to the entire area, the military seized the two vehicles used for the transport and storage of the material.

Environmental crimes and undeclared work

The owner of the company, which owns the site, has been reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The charges are serious: illegal waste management, lack of permits for collection and storage, and missing transportation forms. Added to these are violations of landscape regulations, a fundamental protection for a fragile territory like Ischia.

But the illegality doesn't stop with the environment. During their inspections, the financial police discovered that one of the drivers was employed illegally, without any formal employment contract. This further aggravates the entrepreneur's position in an operation that reaffirms the priority of protecting the island's natural heritage.

It's a good sign that the authorities are taking action against environmental crimes, but I wonder whether there are enough resources and controls to prevent similar situations in the future. More effort is needed.

The Guardia di Finanza's operation was important in protecting the environment, but there are still many problems to be resolved. We hope these actions can lead to lasting change for the island of Ischia.
