Naples - The toll from the dramatic plane crash that occurred Tuesday evening at the Benevento airfield is worsening further.

Venanzio Rapolla, 69 years old on the very day of the tragedy, died: the former Army colonel died at the Burns Center of the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, where he had been urgently transferred due to the injuries sustained in the crash and the subsequent fire on the aircraft.

The clinical drama and death at Cardarelli Hospital

Rapolla's condition appeared desperate from the first moment. With burns covering 90% of his body and several fractures, his medical condition was deemed critical by the Sannio doctors before he was transferred to the Campania capital.

The colonel was at the controls of the ultralight helicopter that impacted the ground, causing the instant death of the other passenger, the well-known 78-year-old entrepreneur Pasquale Esposito.

A life dedicated to flight

Rapolla's passing deprives the aviation world of a high-profile figure. A career officer since 1977, trained on the prestigious Pantera course at the Modena Academy, he had 37 years of service as a helicopter pilot.

Founder of the Benevento Aeroclub and multiple champion in his specialty, he was considered an extremely experienced instructor and examiner for the Aeroclub d'Italia.

The hypotheses being examined by investigators

On the investigative front, the Benevento Prosecutor's Office is continuing its investigations to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the fall.

At the moment, no possibility has been ruled out: investigators are considering the hypothesis of a sudden technical failure, which remains the most likely, without excluding the possibility of illness or human error, although the latter appears less likely given the pilot's proven expertise.
