Naples – There's no respite for Campania's healthcare system. After the images of stretchers lined up at the Cardarelli Hospital and the overwhelming influx at the Santobono Children's Hospital—where young patients saturate the wards over the holidays—the shockwaves of the seasonal flu are hitting the Ospedale del Mare with force.
The Ponticelli hospital, a healthcare hub for much of the Neapolitan province, is under pressure.
The numbers presented by health director Giuseppe Vitiello describe a critical situation: an aggressive virus, rapidly evolving into respiratory complications, and the prospect of an even more challenging January with the return of students to class.
The numbers of the siege: pneumonia and ventilators
It's not the usual flu. Compared to last December, doctors are facing a more vicious enemy. "Compared to 2024, admissions for respiratory conditions are unchanged," explains Vitiello, "but the incidence of type A influenza, which degenerates into severe pneumonia, has increased dramatically."
The most disturbing figure concerns the intensity of the care required: "Between December 29th and January 1st alone, we had 25 cases diagnosed and hospitalized requiring respiratory support. Pneumonia this year is extremely contagious."
These aren't just isolated cases. Since the beginning of December, Ospedale del Mare has seen a dramatic increase in admissions: 300 more in just 30 days compared to the same period last year. This puts enormous pressure on a facility that, despite being a level II emergency department like Cardarelli, also has to deal with healthcare workers who are also falling ill.
The schools' unknown: "The worst could be yet to come."
If the current situation is critical, the future is worrying. "General winter" hasn't yet struck its decisive blow. "We must remember that schools have been closed since mid-December," warns the health director. With the end of the holidays and the return to school after Epiphany, there are fears of a multiplier effect.
"The opening of classes and hours of close contact between students and teachers could cause the infection curve to soar." Ospedale del Mare is taking action, strengthening its facilities and optimizing treatment pathways to prepare for what could be the real flood wave.
The desperate plea: "Go back to your GPs."
Faced with the risk of collapse, Vitiello issues a clear warning to citizens: avoid rushing to the emergency room for symptoms that can be managed at home.
"It's crucial for patients to see their GP first for a diagnosis. These days, people go to the hospital for any symptom, but this is dangerous."
The risk, paradoxically, is precisely that of getting sicker upon entering the hospital: "Arriving weakly risks being infected by other viruses present in the hospital environment, resulting in a potentially lethal overlap of illnesses. Those who are vaccinated and have the flu often don't need hospitalization. Let your family doctor decide whether hospitalization is truly necessary."
The Neapolitan emergency network is holding up, but it's as taut as a violin string. Between pediatric syncytial virus, influenza A, and pneumonia, January promises to be the month of truth for the resilience of the regional healthcare system.

Michela Pellegrini, what reliable data can you provide me with? And on what basis do you want to speak with me?
Adele Ferraiuolo IGNORANCE IS A FAULT IF YOU DON'T FIGHT IT!
Michela Pellegrini, what degradation these people are
Rossella Puca is very good, pediatricians are nowhere to be found, they force even very young children to queue for hours in their offices with just as many sick children, it is obvious that a parent runs to the emergency room
Family doctors should be forced to go to the patient's home as was done in the past.
When you saw those beautiful trails in the sky weeks ago... and then that beautiful chemical haze in the evening hours, at night and in the morning... then you had to masturbate your brain a bit and understand that all this is not normal... and instead... you always sleep.
Filomena Devivo Don't ask me about the mess I had to make to find a doctor
But what is the vaccine for then?
Only 19% have been vaccinated. Do what you want.
Michaele Pezzullo exactly…
Michaele Pezzullo the same goes for you. What data do you allude to in every piece of news you read?
Laura Russo, then, don't get treatment, don't go to doctors or pediatricians. People like you deserve to be reported. Be consistent.
Michela Pellegrini: I can find 10 pieces of data, including official ISTAT data, but you say they're fake, manipulated by Big Pharma and the Power Forty, so what are we talking about? Every verified study is manipulated, so it's just a waste of time.
Poor things
Michaele Pezzullo: Now, what year have ISTAT data confirmed increased mortality? It seems different to me. Please provide me with the data.
Anna Formisano, of course...the flu vaccine from last year, so that virus is also back in circulation. Do you still believe in fairy tales?
Cristina Viola, exactly. It's the immune systems that have been increasingly weakened since 2021. Who knows for what "mysterious" reason!?
Take a nap. Don't speak unless you're a doctor, lawyer, or professor; you'll only cause harm. Everyone has their own profession; let those with the expertise speak.
Mr…Autolino, that little laugh isn't the case. * The news is more than true.
What does Adele Ferraiuolo have to say about the situation in Venezuela? Maybe even her technical opinion on the Crans Montana problem!
Marco Bernardini, I'm not telling you anything because he stupidly had the poison injected into him!! Have a great day!
Adele Ferraiuolo and who told her???
Marco Bernardini, from the way you respond and attack, you are all the same now, fear and envy of those who have not submitted to blackmail!
Michela Pellegrini, I'm reporting you just for saying what I think. But shut up and try to bother someone else, I don't have time to waste on people like you.
Mec Intosc, ISTAT, right? They're the only official ones! Yeah, but besides being anti-vaxxers, you're deniers and conspiracy theorists... so my dad, your data, perhaps extrapolated from Topolino or Corriere dei Piccoli.
Michela Pellegrini what are you saying?
Laura Russo Right
Lies upon lies, it's a new Covid variant and no one is admitting it.
