Naples – The time for waiting is over; now concrete decisions are needed. Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi has issued an unequivocal warning to Naples ahead of the 2032 European Football Championship: within five months, the city must present clear plans and a defined financial framework for the Maradona Stadium, otherwise it risks being excluded from the competition.
"The decisions are up to Mayor Manfredi and President De Laurentiis. We support them, but they are the ones who interpret the vision," Abodi said on the sidelines of the America's Cup Partnership presentation at the Royal Palace. The minister then clarified: "We expect solutions because the waiting period is over. These will be decisions based on merit, not on personal relationships."
The crux of the double project
The issue is further complicated by the potential overlap between the Maradona renovation project and the idea for a new stadium advanced by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis. "I find it hard to imagine two projects that are divergent or mutually exclusive," Abodi emphasized, emphasizing the need for "harmony" between the city and the football club.
The minister noted that the City of Naples has already formally expressed interest in participating in the selection process, but highlighted a paradox: "Do you think Naples could have two stadiums? Everything formally defined by the candidate city will be evaluated, because the candidacy comes from the city."
February, a decisive month
Massimo Sessa, who will receive his final appointment as Super Commissioner for Euro 2032 in February, will be called upon to resolve the final issues. "We expect him to make the final decisions on the stadiums," Abodi anticipated.
The June deadline allows for no exceptions: "In five months, the documents will have to speak clearly. Not only the projects but also the financial framework must be ready, otherwise the most qualified project will proceed." The five Italian stadiums that will host the European Championships will be selected by the Italian Football Federation "based on objective facts: quality of the infrastructure, planning, and collaboration between the clubs and the municipality."
Regarding Mayor Manfredi, Abodi acknowledged his "characteristics of balance and prudence," but warned: "We must be pragmatic. Time flies, and there's less and less of it."
