ISCHIA – More than three years after the landslide that devastated Casamicciola Terme, killing twelve people, the judicial investigation is shifting. The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has placed several municipal administrators and officials under investigation as part of a supplementary investigation into the disaster of November 26, 2022, which swept away homes and streets in the island town.

This breakthrough comes after prosecutors filed a request to dismiss the case at the end of June, arguing that it was impossible to identify direct criminal liability. The victims' families and the Municipality of Casamicciola opposed the request. Preliminary Investigations Judge Nicola Marrone rejected the prosecutor's request and ordered the compulsory indictment of the administrators and officials who served at the helm of the institution between 2012 and 2022.

The names of those involved have not yet been released. Investigators are awaiting the latest technical reports to fully define the charges. The hypothesis is that direct responsibilities may emerge related to land management and the prevention of hydrogeological risks in an area that has been classified as fragile and highly hazardous for years.

The Casamicciola disaster remains an open wound for the island of Ischia. Mud and debris invaded the town at dawn, destroying homes and destroying lives. Now the judiciary is attempting to shed full light on any omissions and decisions that, over time, may have contributed to the heavy toll of that tragedy.

It's important to thoroughly investigate what happened in Casamicciola, even if finding the culprits isn't easy. The victims' families deserve justice, and we hope responsibilities will be determined as soon as possible, but it will take a long time.
