Marigliano – A nighttime raid on the railway level crossing control room. The thieves' target: the electrical equipment stored inside the Italian Railways station located on Via del Carmine, at kilometer marker 6+244.
The robbery occurred shortly after 3:00 AM this morning. The thieves, after forcing entry to the control room, stole cables and electrical components used to manage rail traffic on the Cancello-Sarno line.
The consequences
The theft triggered a chain reaction with far-reaching consequences. The damage to the system caused a short circuit that disrupted the electrical circuits, sparking a fire inside the cabin. The flames, likely fueled by the short circuit, completely paralyzed the line's signaling and control system.
Rail traffic on the route was immediately suspended for safety reasons, with inevitable repercussions on regional connections and inconvenience for commuters.
Carabinieri from the Marigliano station responded to the scene and began an investigation to identify the perpetrators. Investigators are reviewing footage from any surveillance cameras in the area and gathering witness statements to reconstruct the events of the raid.
The investigative hypothesis
The possibility that gangs specializing in the theft of copper and electrical equipment, increasingly sought-after on the black market, are behind the theft has not been ruled out. Carabinieri investigators are investigating whether similar incidents have occurred in other areas of the province, seeking a possible pattern of operations.
Ferrovie dello Stato technicians are working to restore the system's functionality and allow traffic to resume as quickly as possible.
