An exceptionally large-scale anti-drug operation has seized over two tons of ultra-pure cocaine in the port of Genoa. Finance police from the Provincial Command and officials from the Anti-Fraud Unit of the Customs and Monopolies Agency discovered the shipment in the Sampierdarena port area, halting what appears to be one of the largest drug trafficking operations in recent years.

The drugs, weighing a total of 2.380 kilograms before packaging, were divided into 2.109 blocks. Expeditious analyses conducted immediately after the discovery confirmed the exceptional purity of the substance, a factor that would have multiplied its value once cut and distributed in European drug dealing centers.

The concealment and the provenance

The drug had been carefully hidden inside 87 colorful jute bags, further wrapped in heavy-duty nylon netting to evade detection. The container, which departed from one of Colombia's main ports, had crossed the Atlantic following the trade routes connecting South America with the Mediterranean.

The choice of the port of Genoa is no coincidence. The Ligurian port has historically been a key crossroads for trade flows to Europe, making it particularly attractive to criminal organizations engaged in intercontinental drug trafficking. Investigations must now establish the identity of the cargo's final recipients and the ramifications of the criminal network involved.

The economic value and impact

Investigators estimate that the seized shipment, if released into the drug market, would have generated approximately €1,5 billion in profits for organized crime. A flood of money fuels illegal economies and finances further criminal activities, from corruption to money laundering.

The operation is part of a broader strategy to combat international drug trafficking, aimed not only at targeting the leaders of criminal organizations but also at protecting the most vulnerable segments of the population, often victims of the devastating effects of drug trafficking.

The synergy between the forces in the field

The operation's success is the result of intense intelligence and control efforts conducted jointly by the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs and Monopolies Agency. Collaboration between the two institutions remains a key element in the fight against drug trafficking, ensuring constant surveillance of goods transiting through one of the Mediterranean's most strategic ports.

The authorities emphasize that this synergy represents an essential bulwark for citizen safety and the maintenance of public order, in a context where drug routes are constantly evolving to evade controls.
