The sea around Capri is on the verge of enhanced protection. The Senate has unanimously approved the bill establishing a Marine Protected Area around the island, a long-anticipated measure that must now be considered by the Chamber of Deputies for final approval.

The text mandates the Ministry of the Environment to initiate, within six months of the law's entry into force, the technical investigation necessary to delimit and establish the area. This is a key step that will define the perimeter, levels of protection, and methods of use of one of the most famous and fragile stretches of sea in the Mediterranean.

The measure also includes dedicated resources: half a million euros for each of 2025, 2026, and 2027 for the necessary interventions to establish the Marine Protected Area, plus an additional €400 annually starting in 2025 for ordinary management. These funds will support control activities, environmental monitoring, biodiversity protection, and the regulation of permitted activities, from navigation to tourism.

With the establishment of the Capri MPA, Campania now has seven marine protected areas, strengthening the network of protected zones along its coast. This achievement aims to combine environmental protection and sustainable enhancement of a natural heritage that represents not only a landscape icon but also an economic resource linked to tourism and the sea.

Naples – While Christmas tables are filled with seafood delicacies, the Mediterranean Sea is paying a heavy price: illegal fishing and overexploitation are hitting hard, especially during the holidays. Taking advantage of the skyrocketing demand for crustaceans and cephalopods, poachers are not hesitant to raid resources within Marine Protected Areas, ignoring minimum sizes and seasonality.
