Naples – The nightmare of fire materialized at dawn in the heart of the Spanish Quarter. At 6:30 this morning, a raging fire broke out on the ground floor of an apartment on Vico Campanile al Consiglio, a narrow street just off Via Girardi, in the maze of narrow streets of the historic center.
The flames, perhaps consumed by a short circuit, triggered panic, forcing the evacuation of the building and filling the alleys with a thick and dangerous column of smoke.
Firefighters immediately responded to the scene, supported by State Police units from the Office of General Prevention and Public Rescue and the Montecalvario Police Station.
Firefighting and safety operations are still underway at the time of writing, while technicians are already working to determine the definitive cause of the fire.

Fortunately, the situation appears to be averted: no serious injuries have been reported. However, the fire's aftereffects have been significant. According to initial reports gathered on-site, around twenty people, residents of the immediate vicinity, have been admitted to the Pellegrini Hospital emergency room for evaluations of smoke inhalation, likely caused by inhaling toxic fumes during the initial stages of the fire. All are reported to be in non-threatening condition.
The scene, in the early hours of the morning, was extremely tense: narrow alleys made almost impassable by emergency vehicles, residents awakened by screams and the smell of burning, families hastily dragged out.
The short circuit, the most likely hypothesis at the moment, caused the initial fire, which probably quickly found fuel in the home's furnishings, quickly generating a fire of considerable intensity.
The incident once again highlights the safety and vulnerability of the city's oldest and densest urban fabric, where the layout of spaces and the age of utilities can pose additional risks in an emergency. Firefighters are still working on cleanup and cooling operations, while the building remains uninhabitable.
