Fears erupted in Eboli, in the Salerno province, after a fire broke out in a building on Via Don Romolo Murri. The flames broke out in the basement of the apartment building, releasing a thick cloud of smoke that quickly engulfed the stairwell and several apartments.
The alarm was raised by residents themselves, who noticed the fire and contacted the firefighters from the Eboli detachment, who responded with a ladder truck and a fire truck.
Once inside the building, the firefighters discovered a pile of various materials, including plastic and rubber, burning, including LPG cylinders. These were immediately removed and cooled to prevent explosions.
During the firefighting operations, rescuers located a bedridden elderly woman and four children on the top floor, trapped by smoke. The rescuers were rescued from the balconies, and the people were safely recovered and then handed over to paramedics.
The situation immediately appeared critical due to the high concentration of toxic fumes, exacerbated by the opening of apartment doors. All affected residents were transported to local hospitals for evaluation; some were even transferred to Naples for smoke inhalation.
In addition to the firefighters, the 118 paramedics, the police, and the mayor of Eboli intervened on the scene, closely monitoring the rescue operations.
