Nola– The dead of night was shattered by a spine-chilling roar, jolting residents of Piazza Marconi and surrounding streets from their sleep. Shortly after 3:00 a.m., a violent explosion briefly illuminated the center of Nola, sending debris, glass, and pieces of the targeted device into the street: the ATM of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena branch.
The scene of the disaster: twisted metal and cracked windows
At dawn, the scene that first responders saw was one of destruction. The cash dispenser, located on the ground floor of a building that also houses a bingo hall, was completely destroyed by the force of the explosion.
Fragments of the car lie scattered on the asphalt for several meters, while initial investigations show damage to the building's supporting structure. The shutters of nearby businesses appear warped, and several windows were shattered. Fortunately, the area was deserted at the time.
Residents' terror: "It felt like an earthquake, the houses shook."
"It was a deafening noise, followed by a tremor. I jumped out of bed, thinking it was a collapse," said a local resident, who declined to be named. Many, like him, rushed to their balconies in panic, then immediately called the police.
The normally quiet square was filled within minutes with the sirens of the Nola Police Station, Carabinieri, and Fire Brigade patrol cars, who promptly intervened to secure the area and prevent any collapses.
The investigation: the perpetrators and motive are being sought.
Investigators and forensic technicians are still conducting investigations on the scene. The main working hypothesis is that of a bomb attack aimed at robbery, a modus operandi that, unfortunately, is not new to the Campania crime scene. It remains to be seen whether the criminals managed to withdraw the cash from the ATM before detonating the device, or whether the explosion was merely a failed attempt.
The investigation is also focusing on surveillance camera footage in the area, in the hope of identifying those responsible for the dangerous act, which put the safety of the entire neighborhood at risk.
While citizens are wondering about the resurgence of similar incidents, investigations are proceeding at a rapid pace to shed light on this dramatic night in Nola.
