A long and extremely high-risk chase, culminating in a flight on foot into the countryside and subsequent arrest. This is what happened along the A1 motorway, where Caserta Nord Highway Police personnel, in collaboration with the Cassino Highway Police, arrested two Neapolitans on charges of resisting a public official and aggravated fraud.
The events began during a routine traffic patrol at kilometre 670 south of the A1, when a patrol from the Cassino sub-section ordered an Alfa Romeo Junior to stop as it was travelling at high speed despite heavy traffic.
However, at the sight of the officers, the two occupants accelerated, starting a long and daring chase.
The escape continued for several kilometers, reaching the Capua highway exit, where the fugitives took the wrong exit, seriously endangering the safety of passing motorists. After knocking down the toll booth barrier and driving further in the opposite direction, the car was abandoned in the industrial area of Pignataro Maggiore, in the Caserta area.
From there, they fled on foot into the surrounding countryside, ending shortly afterward when the two attempted in vain to hide in the thick vegetation. Apprehended by officers, they were searched: they had €3.450 in cash and several gold jewelry items hidden inside a purse.
Taken to the offices of the Highway Police of Caserta Nord, the investigators – in collaboration with the Carabinieri of the Passo Corese Station (Rieti) – ascertained, in the initial phase of the investigation, that the money and valuables were the proceeds of an aggravated fraud committed a few hours earlier in Fara in Sabina to the detriment of an 80-year-old woman.
According to the investigation, the victim was contacted by phone by a person impersonating her nephew, complaining of alleged financial difficulties. Shortly thereafter, an accomplice showed up at her home posing as a postal worker, successfully stealing cash and jewelry worth more than €20.
All recovered material was placed under criminal seizure, pending its return to its rightful owner. The preliminary investigations judge ordered house arrest for one of the suspects and the other to report to the judicial police.
Please note that the proceedings are currently in the preliminary investigation phase and that the suspects are considered innocent until a final sentence is reached. The precautionary measures were adopted with limited adversarial proceedings, and all liability will be assessed by the competent judge in the subsequent procedural phases.

The article describes a rather complicated situation involving a chase. I don't understand how people can get to such a point, but it's important that the police do their job. I hope justice is served.
