SALERNO – A procedure that until recently seemed impossible has become a reality in the operating rooms of the San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d'Aragona Hospital. The Orthotraumatology team led by Dr. Mauro Nese restored mobility to a patient suffering from severe bilateral hip ankylosis, a condition that had progressively condemned him to immobility and constant pain.
The clinical picture was extremely complex. Bilateral coxarthrosis, aggravated by a body weight exceeding 150 kg and several concomitant conditions, had made any surgical intervention too risky for years. The lack of treatment had led to an extreme situation: the hip joints were practically frozen, with the femoral head fusing into the acetabulum and a total loss of movement.
"We carefully evaluated every risk and possible therapeutic strategy," Nese explained. "It was a critical case, requiring meticulous planning and the involvement of multiple professionals." The operation, which lasted approximately five hours, was successfully completed thanks to teamwork involving anesthesiologists, surgeons, and physical therapists, who worked seamlessly together throughout the post-operative phase.
"The surgery was successfully performed thanks to the support of anesthesiologist Dr. Milito, Dr. De Cicco, who was at my side during this complex situation, and physical therapist Alfredo Rizzo. By supporting each other, we achieved an absolutely brilliant result," added the chief physician. "Our hospital has the right professionals to tackle the most complex surgical challenges, confirming the excellence of Ruggi Orthopedics."
In the days following the operation, the patient began his rehabilitation program and has already shown encouraging signs, with a progressive recovery of mobility and, most importantly, the disappearance of the chronic pain that had limited every aspect of his daily life for years. This result marks a significant milestone not only for the patient, but also for highly complex orthopedic surgery in the region.
"This is a long-awaited project, crucial for the restoration of the San Lorenzo Maggiore Monumental Complex and for the entire UNESCO World Heritage Site of the historic center. It will bring overall benefits to the city's cultural and tourist offerings, completing one of the many unfinished projects," said Mayor Gaetano…

The interventions described in the article are very interesting, but I'm not sure if all the details are accurate. Although it seems like there was a great deal of teamwork, it doesn't really explain how they solved the problem.
