Ischia – A morning of apprehension at a high school in Casamicciola Terme, where four students were struck down by sudden illnesses after consuming bottled mineral water.
The young people, who had purchased the properly sealed product inside the school, were immediately transported to the “Anna Rizzoli” hospital in Lacco Ameno.
The clinical picture
According to initial medical reports, the students' conditions are stable and none of them are in danger of dying. Three of them have been admitted to the Short-Term Intensive Care Unit (OBI), where they will be monitored for 24 hours, as required by protocols for suspected poisoning. A fourth student, who reportedly consumed only a minimal amount of liquid, has been detained as a precaution for further evaluation.
Investigations and seizure
The Carabinieri of the Casamicciola Terme station promptly intervened in the case. They seized the unconsumed bottles and collected statements from the parents to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the purchase.
At the same time, the Prevention Center of the ASL Napoli 2 Nord has raised the alert. The health authority's technicians are working to:
Identify the batch number of the mineral water consignment.
Evaluate the possible precautionary recall of products belonging to the same series from the market.
Perform chemical and biological analyses on the seized samples.
Waiting for toxicology tests
The seized material will undergo rigorous laboratory analysis to identify any contaminants. Investigators are maintaining the utmost confidentiality, pending the results of toxicology tests that will determine whether the illness was caused by product alteration or accidental external factors.
