Acerra – Copper thieves are stopping at nothing. On the night between Friday and Saturday, around 12:35 a.m., at the request of a security company, the Carabinieri responded to a theft along the high-speed rail line under construction, specifically at construction site RI06-RI07 (access VA17), in the Acerra countryside.

A shot stopped in its tracks

Upon arriving on the scene, the Carabinieri officers caught the unknown assailants cutting copper cables attached high up on power poles. The criminals didn't have time to complete their haul and fled, leaving traces of the failed raid on the ground. No immediate arrests were made, but investigations are already underway to identify those responsible.

The trail of inconveniences and serial thefts

This episode rekindles the spotlight on the scourge of copper theft on high-speed train construction sites in Campania, following the serious theft and arson attack on the electrical substation on the Naples-Cancello line.

That event, which occurred a few weeks ago, caused a complete halt to train service, causing enormous disruption to thousands of commuters. The repair work will last several weeks, with delays and cancellations impacting the entire metropolitan area.

It's incredible how these copper thieves stop at nothing, but unfortunately it's an ongoing phenomenon. Every time I read news about thefts from construction sites, I wonder how it's possible we can't stop them.
