Nigeria flew to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a resounding 4-0 victory over Mozambique, but the clear and authoritative victory was overshadowed by an ugly on-pitch altercation between two of their key players: Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
Monday's match was virtually over by the second half, when goals from Osimhen (a brace), Lookman (a goal and two assists) and Adams's strike had created an unbridgeable gap.
Yet, precisely at the moment of greatest competitive relaxation, with the result firmly in hand, nerves exploded. According to what was seen and heard on the pitch, Osimhen was annoyed by a missed pass from a teammate.
Lookman, the former Napoli player who has now become the team's technical leader, intervened to try to defuse the situation. The result: the Galatasaray striker suddenly turned toward the Atalanta player and began a heated exchange, so much so that he repeatedly uttered the phrase "It's a team game," a reference to the sense of community that sounded more like an accusation than a reflection.
The face-to-face confrontation lasted only a few seconds but was visible enough to attract everyone's attention. Moments later, Osimhen, visibly upset, made unmistakable gestures toward coach Eric Chelle, asking for a substitution.
The request was granted five minutes later. Nigeria left the pitch with qualification secured and impressive attacking numbers (Osimhen and Lookman both have three goals in four games, with Lookman also adding four assists), but it left an uncomfortable question: how much weight could this friction have on the road to a possible final?
On Saturday, in the quarterfinals, the Super Eagles will face the winner of the Algeria-Congo match. To go the distance, they'll need all their offensive power, but above all, they'll need Osimhen and Lookman to get back to speaking the same language—the language of the pitch. Because when they argue, even a 4-0 victory risks leaving a bitter taste.

Osimhen the classic stinker is made to rise again
It's strange that two players as strong as Osimhen and Lookman are arguing on the pitch, especially after a win like this. Perhaps they should talk to each other more to avoid tensions and improve teamwork.
