A yard transformed into an open-air landfill and an illegal wastewater disposal system. This is what the Carabinieri Forestry Unit discovered in Montoro, in the province of Avellino, during targeted checks to combat pollution of the Sarno River, one of the most affected waterways in the Campania region.
During an inspection of a company that maintains and repairs motorcycles and cars, officers seized approximately fifty cubic meters of hazardous waste. The area, covering approximately two thousand square meters, contained sixty-six vehicles in an advanced state of disrepair, piled up without any environmental safety measures.
Of particular concern was the presence of an underground tank used for the illegal disposal of wastewater, a system that could have further compromised the fragile environmental balance of the area and fueled pollution of the Sarno basin. Following investigations, the company owner, a fifty-year-old local businessman, was charged with illegal waste management.
