Naples – The first day of 2026 in Naples began not with champagne, but with icy spray and frostbitten smiles. At the Mappatella beach this morning, the classic tradition of the winter challenge was renewed: hundreds of swimmers dived into the gulf waters to wish each other a brave new year, just like those who brave the 14-15°C sea temperature in January.
Among the most applauded was an 80-year-old Neapolitan woman, now the event's historic mascot, who with determination and a big smile took her best wishes dive, proving that age doesn't matter when the spirit is right.
Even the most touching symbolic gesture was not lacking: a participant on crutches, recovering from an injury, still wanted to enter the water so as not to miss the ritual of the first swim of the year, amidst general applause and admiration.

Green and Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, present at the demonstration, emphasized the symbolic and concrete value of the initiative: "For years we have fought for the reclamation and restoration of bathing conditions on this stretch of coast. Today is a significant day: it demonstrates that Naples' beaches can and should be enjoyed year-round.
Thanks to the commitment of the Municipality and the Port Authority, we have secured the beach's cleanup and controlled wastewater. It was a long battle, but today we are reaping the rewards: the sea is safe to swim again, and the administration has extended its services to beachgoers.
We will continue to ensure that the sea truly becomes a resource for everyone, 365 days a year." A dip, then, that is more than just a superstitious ritual: it is a tangible sign of a city that is slowly recovering its relationship with the sea. And it does so in its own way: with grit, irony, and an extraordinary 80-year-old lady in the front row.

I think this event is very important for the city of Naples and demonstrates how people can come together to celebrate. However, more attention needs to be paid to safety, especially for the elderly who participate in these risky activities.
