Naples – After hours of alert, the Port Authority has suspended the search in the Gulf of Naples, which began following a report of a presumed "man overboard."
The alarm was raised because a person, hit by a wave, had fallen into the water while on a stand-up paddleboard.
According to the reconstruction, the alarm was raised by a security guard from the Gaiola Underwater Park, who reported having seen the fall in footage recorded by a closed-circuit camera.
However, at the moment, no emergency message (mayday) has been received by the Coast Guard operations room and there have been no official reports of missing persons.
During the investigation, it was also confirmed that a regular SUP user, who frequents the very area indicated in the report, had returned home as normal. Witnesses present in the area also spoke with, but no one confirmed seeing anyone fall into the sea.
During the operations, a stand-up paddleboard was found at the indicated spot, but this circumstance is not currently considered decisive: after days of rough seas, it cannot be ruled out that the equipment could already be adrift in the area.
The search, conducted by two Coast Guard patrol boats with the support of a Fire Brigade helicopter, was finally suspended when darkness fell. The search may resume if new reports are received or evidence is available to identify a missing person.

I don't understand why the search was suspended. There's always the possibility that someone is at sea. Even if there are no reports of missing persons, it would be best to continue searching until we have certainty.
