Naples – For weeks, the Asse Mediano has once again become synonymous with fear for those who daily travel the arterial road connecting the municipalities north of Naples. Between traffic jams, slowdowns, and crowded intersections, reports and complaints of robberies targeting motorists have multiplied, with videos and stories circulating on social media and reposted online as evidence of a now daily emergency.
In this climate, the latest intervention by the State Police is being interpreted by many citizens as a sort of "liberation," a concrete sign following protests over open-door shootings.
Yesterday afternoon, during targeted and ongoing operations organized by the Naples Police Headquarters to target predatory crimes along the Asse Mediano, officers arrested two young men, 18 and 19, both Neapolitans and already known to law enforcement. They are charged with aggravated robbery and resisting arrest.
One of the two bandits was under house arrest
The 19-year-old was also arrested for evasion because he was already under house arrest, while both were also charged with carrying weapons or objects capable of causing offence.
According to the reconstruction, the two apparently acted with a rapid and repeated pattern: first a robbery at a gas station, then a second robbery a few minutes later, and then they fled.
The attacks reportedly took place around 4:00 PM at the GT Fuel store on Via San Francesco in Patria and about twenty minutes later at the Q8 Euro Energia store on Via Circonvallazione Esterna in Qualiano, threatening employees to hand over their takings. After the second incident, the two men reportedly drove away in the direction of Giugliano, but the ride ended shortly thereafter.
The police followed them without losing sight of them and stopped them in Giugliano, near a hotel where they had stopped. They had €260 on them, and in the car they found a pair of scissors and a replica pistol without the red cap, believed to be the weapon used to intimidate the victims.
The investigation continues: according to reports, the two are also suspected of a wider series of robberies in the provinces of Naples, Salerno, and Caserta.
