Naples – Carabinieri from the Naples Provincial Command are intensifying checks at Roma camps in the metropolitan area. This morning and early afternoon, a "High Impact" operation targeted the camp at Via Circumvallazione Esterna 165, with dozens of officers deployed.

Carabinieri officers from the Stella Company, the Carabinieri Forestry Unit, the Ecological Operations Unit (NOE), Naples Local Police, and staff from the ASL Veterinary Authority participated. The objective: to combat widespread illegality and verify compliance with environmental, building, and health regulations.

120 people were identified, 68 of whom were already known to law enforcement; 21 vehicles were inspected. Five were reported for illegal construction.

Focus on animal welfare: five dogs were checked by Carabinieri and veterinarians. One puppy in serious condition was rescued and transferred to the Naples Veterinary ASL.

An illegal workshop was seized containing polluting materials: demolition waste, discarded tires, 20 kilos of copper, circuit boards, and lead batteries (special waste, some hazardous). A duffel bag containing four screwdrivers and a flexible hose complete with discs was also found.

The operation, which lasted several hours, resulted in the seizure and removal of 21 abandoned vehicles, many without license plates. The company Asia cleared the camp entrance, clearing away a huge pile of waste.

It's interesting to see the Carabinieri conducting checks in Roma camps, but I wonder whether these operations are actually effective. It's unclear whether these interventions will solve the problems of illegality. A long-term strategy is needed.
