Naples, a tense afternoon at two different hospitals in the metropolitan area, where healthcare workers were targeted by incidents of violence and crime. Two separate interventions by the Carabinieri revealed an increasingly critical situation within the healthcare facilities.

At the Vecchio Policlinico – AOU Luigi Vanvitelli hospital in Piazza Miraglia, in the San Giuseppe neighborhood, Carabinieri from the Naples Central Company arrested a 49-year-old man on charges of aggravated theft. According to the investigation, the man likely entered the facility under the pretext of undergoing a medical exam.

Once inside, he entered a doctor's office, where he stole a cell phone and a laptop from the doctor's bag.

The 49-year-old was stopped shortly afterward by some patients who noticed the theft. The Carabinieri, who arrived immediately on the scene, searched the man and found him also in possession of a knife and a pair of electrical wire cutters.

Almost simultaneously, a second incident occurred at the Santa Maria delle Grazie hospital in Pozzuoli, where Carabinieri officers from the Licola station responded to an assault on a nurse.

Following the investigation, a 28-year-old patient, a convicted felon and previously under house arrest, was charged. He was admitted to the health facility. The young man, for trivial reasons, allegedly assaulted a health worker during his shift.

Two different episodes, but one with one alarming fact in common: once again, hospitals are becoming places of unsafety for those who work on the front lines every day.

This situation is truly worrying. Hospitals should be safe places for patients and staff. I don't understand how violent incidents can occur in these facilities. We need greater security.
