Naples – Health and municipal authorities are responding with utmost concern following the report of a case of meningitis involving a student at the Angiulli comprehensive school.

The mayor and the municipal administration are monitoring the situation in close collaboration with the ASL Napoli 1 Centro and the school management.

As a precaution, the school's management has ordered the entire building to be closed on Wednesday, January 14th, to allow for extraordinary disinfection and sanitization of all areas. The Local Health Authority's Department of Collective Prevention has also outlined the operational measures to be adopted in the coming days, which include enhanced daily cleaning, health surveillance of the school community, and the dissemination of accurate information about the disease.

Meanwhile, the epidemiological situation remains under close monitoring. Three other people, aged between 22 and 25, are hospitalized at the Cotugno Hospital and have tested positive for Neisseria meningitidis.

The Colli Hospital, which manages the facility, has activated the screening and surveillance protocols required for these cases.

Health authorities have, however, reassured the population: the lack of a temporal coincidence in the onset of symptoms and the analysis of the isolated strains do not indicate the existence of a direct chain of infection or a single outbreak.

The incidence of cases, experts explain, is within the expected seasonal parameters, also in relation to the recent and sudden drop in temperatures.
