Naples – The disruption for residents and motorists in the Phlegraean Fields area has ended. Via Nuova Bagnoli, a key artery in the neighborhood, has reopened to traffic. It had been urgently closed following the road's subsidence yesterday.
The reopening, which officially took place at 19:00 PM today, Friday, January 30, concerns the section near house number 598, where the sinkhole opened, triggering the alarm and the subsequent traffic blockade.
Security checks
Before resurfacing and reopening, Palazzo San Giacomo implemented a series of rigorous checks to prevent underground dangers invisible from the surface. As a statement from the City of Naples emphasizes, the priority was "ensuring maximum safety." For this reason, thorough technical inspections were conducted:
ABC monitored the integrity of the water and sewerage networks.
Italgas has carried out inspections on its methane distribution systems.
The tests were negative, fortunately ruling out any anomalies, leaks, or structural damage to the utilities that could have prolonged the construction site.
The emergency intervention
The restoration of the road in record time was made possible thanks to the work of the Urban Emergency Service of Napoli Servizi. Teams worked nonstop from the moment the incident was reported to secure the area and fill the gap in the road surface. Once the safety and asphalt repairs were completed, the road was cleared for use: the road is now passable in both directions, restoring normal traffic flow in the neighborhood.

It's good news that the road has reopened after yesterday's disruption. But I wonder if there were enough checks to ensure another sinkhole doesn't happen again. I hope safety was thoroughly checked.
