Naples – With the holidays over, Via Toledo is undergoing a major overhaul. Starting January 7th, the beating heart of Neapolitan shopping and tourism will undergo extensive, extraordinary maintenance.

The work, which will begin on the side of Piazza Trieste e Trento, aims to restore decorum and safety to one of the city's most heavily trafficked arteries.

The micro-construction site strategy

To avoid a complete blockage of a street with constant pedestrian traffic, Palazzo San Giacomo has opted for a "chessboard" strategy. The work will be carried out through mobile micro-construction sites that will move alternately from one side of the road to the other.

This solution will ensure that pedestrian crossings remain accessible at all times and minimize the economic impact on the area's numerous businesses.

New techniques against landslides

This won't be a simple "makeover." Infrastructure Councilor Edoardo Cosenza emphasized that the City has decided to abandon old construction methods, which have proven ineffective over the years.

“We will adopt the technique already used successfully on the Lungomare,” Cosenza explained, “with particular attention to the subfloors and underlying materials to ensure a much more reliable seal than in the past.”

The plan includes:

Removal of porphyry cubes and lava stone slabs.

Demolition of the old subfloors and reconstruction of the foundation layer.

The repositioning of the cubes on the road surface and the use of Etna stone for the sidewalks.

Cleaning and leveling of manhole covers and drains.

Mayor Gaetano Manfredi is pleased, seeing this construction project as fulfilling a promise he made to the citizens: "Via Toledo is a key artery; with these works, it will be even more beautiful and safe for Neapolitans and tourists." The decision to start the bulldozers only after Epiphany was made precisely so as not to disrupt the exceptional tourist surge that has characterized Naples in this early 2026.

The article talks about the work on Via Toledo that will begin after the holidays. But I wonder if it will actually be effective. Let's hope there isn't too much inconvenience for shopkeepers and pedestrians during this work.
