Salerno – Environmental groups are mobilizing against the proposed expansion of Salerno's commercial port. Italia Nostra, Legambiente Salerno "Orizzonti," and the "Salute e Vita" Committee are announcing a public protest against the master plan, which, according to the initiative's promoters, would lead to the "cancellation of the public beach" near the Molo di Ponente.
The plan, according to the associations, calls for the expansion of the western dock, the extension of the pier itself, and the lengthening of the eastern pier by 2030. These interventions, they argue, would also involve modifying ship entry routes, bringing the stretch between Cetara and Vietri sul Mare closer to the coast.
"This puts the Amalfi Coast ecosystem, already a UNESCO World Heritage Site, at risk," the organizers denounce, also citing the already significant environmental impact on the city. "Salerno has already contributed significantly to the port in terms of environmental impact and pollution. Enough is enough," the statement reads.
The meeting is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. on the free beach on Via Ligea, in Salerno.

It's important for people to participate in these protests. However, I believe we should also consider the economic benefits the port brings to the city. It's not easy to strike a balance between development and the environment.
