Nola – Shortly before midnight, the Carabinieri responded to a local hospital emergency room following a report from medical staff. A one-year-old girl had been taken to the emergency room after ingesting a small amount of hashish.

Fortunately, the little girl's condition never raised any concerns about her life, but doctors ordered her hospitalization for monitoring and routine checks. A rapid investigation by the Carabinieri revealed the responsibility of the father, a 26-year-old resident of Brusciano, a municipality near Nola and already known to law enforcement for a criminal record.

The man was charged at liberty with possession with intent to sell and for negligently endangering his minor daughter's safety. Local social workers have also intervened, assessing the family situation to protect the child.

Unfortunately, the Nola incident is not an isolated one.

In recent years, a worrying series of similar cases has been recorded in the province of Naples and the Vesuvian hinterland, almost always related to hashish left unattended in homes or accessible to children, often mistaken for chocolate or sweets.

In the last few months alone, there have been several similar incidents: in January 2025, a one-year-old child ended up in Santobono after ingesting hashish found in the kitchen of his grandparents' house in Boscoreale; similar incidents have occurred in Naples and other towns in the area, involving children under two suffering from THC poisoning.

In some cases, the severity was greater, resulting in admissions to pediatric intensive care. Nationally, the phenomenon is steadily growing: pediatric emergency rooms are recording an increase in admissions for accidental cannabis intoxication in children under 5-6 years old, often linked to the increased domestic availability of the substance.

The recurring dynamic is almost always the same: the drug – hashish or inflorescences – is kept in accessible places (ashtrays, bedside tables, low drawers) and the children, in the exploratory phase typical of that age, ingest it mistaking it for food.

The effects on the central nervous system of the little ones are particularly intense: profound lethargy, vomiting, tachycardia, hypotension, and—in the most severe cases—convulsive seizures and respiratory depression. The Carabinieri in Nola are now investigating whether the father had larger quantities of the drug and whether there were any previous episodes of neglect.

The Prosecutor's Office was informed

The Prosecutor's Office at the Juvenile Court of Naples has been informed to assess possible protective measures for the little girl. These events dramatically bring to the forefront the issue of parental responsibility in the management of narcotics in the presence of young children: even a "modest quantity" can pose a mortal danger to a one-year-old child.

It's truly worrying that children can ingest something as dangerous as hashish. Families should be more careful and not leave these substances lying around; it could happen to anyone, especially the very young.
