Messina – The new year begins under the sign of bloodshed in the workplace. A tragic accident shocked yesterday afternoon in Fondachello Valdina, Messina, where a 69-year-old worker lost his life inside the warehouses of a brick manufacturing company.

The man, originally from Avellino, died instantly after falling approximately four meters into the void.

According to initial reconstructions carried out by the Carabinieri who responded to the scene, the victim was engaged in some welding work when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost his balance and fell from a precipitous height. Despite rescue efforts, the impact left him with no chance of survival, turning a work shift into yet another case of negligent homicide.

The incident sparked an immediate and harsh reaction from union leaders. Ivan Tripodi (General Secretary of UIL Messina) and Pasquale De Vardo (Feneal UIL Tirrenica) expressed their outrage in a joint statement, pointing the finger at the lack of legislative protections for older workers.

“It is unacceptable to work at 69, and it is even more unacceptable to do so at dangerous heights even for a twenty-year-old,” the union representatives declared, calling the incident an “outrage to the conscience.”

The union is once again forcefully calling for the introduction of the crime of workplace homicide and the implementation of the "Zero Deaths at Work" plan. For the UIL, the Valdina tragedy is not just an accident, but a symptom of a system that fails to protect the most vulnerable, forced into strenuous and risky jobs well past retirement age, in what is now being described as an unstoppable war bulletin.
