An evening that threatened to turn into a much more serious adventure ended with a rescue operation in the heart of the Maiella National Park. Late yesterday evening, in Pennapiedimonte, in the province of Chieti, four hikers in their twenties, originally from the province of Caserta, became stranded by snow near the Rifugio d'Ugni.

The group, who set out wearing clothing suitable for cold temperatures but lacking the technical equipment needed to tackle snowy terrain, was unable to reach the refuge. Difficulties increased during the return attempt, when one of the group suffered a sprain that made it impossible to continue on their own. As darkness fell, the situation prompted the alarm to be raised.

A ground team from the Abruzzo Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service responded to the scene, supported by the CNSAS operations center technician. The rescuers reached the group, administered first aid, and escorted the four young people safely to the road, where a 118 ambulance was waiting. The operation concluded around 11:00 PM, with no serious injuries.

You definitely need to be more careful when going to the mountains, especially in winter. Snow can be very treacherous, and you should never underestimate the weather conditions.

It's incredible to think how inexperience can lead to dangerous situations. I hope this episode serves as a lesson for other hikers in the future.

The situation was very complicated, but the rescuers did an excellent job. However, I wonder how these kids could have set out without the proper equipment to tackle the snow, risking so much.
