Naples – Circumvesuviana commuters are fed up. "Tired of the political wrangling that's paralyzing service," representatives of the main civic committees and social groups have sent an open letter to the regional transport councilor, Mario Casillo, requesting an urgent meeting.
The letter was signed by Enzo Ciniglio (spokesperson for the Facebook group “No to the cuts to Circumvesuviana trains”), Salvatore Ferraro (spokesperson for the “Circumvesuviana-Eav” group), Marcello Fabbrocini (president of the Cifariello-Ottaviano civic committee) and Salvatore Alaia (president of the E(a)Vitiamolo Sperone civic committee).
"For fifteen years, we have been single-handedly fighting for the right to mobility and the development of the areas served by the Vesuvian lines operated by EAV," the spokespeople wrote. "We no longer tolerate election-campaign shows while we wait for trains whose arrival is uncertain."
Aware of the network's "dramatic situation," the committees are calling for a meeting to "take stock and agree on a path forward that will ensure a stable service." The goal: "To revitalize the Circumvesuviana from its ashes within a reasonable timeframe." They firmly distance themselves from those "crying scandal today after years of absence": "Enough with the speculation at the expense of commuters!"
Over the years of demonstrations, appeals, and petitions, the signatories state, "with rare exceptions, we have never felt the support of local institutional representatives." Their final appeal is clear: "Be serious, get off the train!"
