Torre del Greco – The Coast Guard is cracking down on illegal fishing and risky behavior in the Gulf of Naples. This morning, personnel from the CP 549 patrol boat—back in service after winter work—identified and removed a gillnet approximately 1.000 meters long, positioned without any markings at the entrance to the port of Torre del Greco.
The gear, cast by an amateur fisherman, posed a very serious threat to navigational safety: the net, lacking buoys or light signals, risked hindering or damaging vessels entering and exiting the port, which is frequented by yachtsmen and pleasure craft.
The net was immediately seized; no fish was found inside, a sign of the swift and effective intervention of the Torre del Greco Port Authority. The person responsible has been reported to the judicial authorities for illegal fishing and endangering the safety of navigation. This is not the only incident recorded in recent days.
Already on Friday, January 23, another person was reported for unauthorized spearfishing in the port's internal waters: the man, equipped with a loaded spear gun and a dark wetsuit, was operating without the required signal balloon, making himself invisible to passing vessels and endangering his own safety and that of other sea users.
In the previous days, however, during a patrol in the waters off Ercolano, the patrol boat stopped a pleasure craft on board which several specimens of swordfish were found, a species protected by stringent measures and subject to catch limits.
The occupants were fined administratively and the catch was seized. The operations—coordinated by the 4th Area Fishing Control Center of the Campania Maritime Directorate—will continue intensively in the coming days.
The stated objective: to combat illegal fishing, protect the coastal ecosystem, ensure safety at sea, and protect consumers from fish products of dubious origin. The Coast Guard reiterates its call for compliance with the rules governing the use of the sea, a common good to be preserved for all.
